cherry blossom sunrise

This year was my tenth year seeing the cherry blossoms in D.C. and my fifth year doing a sunrise photo shoot at the Tidal Basin. Besides witnessing the most gorgeous light, sunrise is also the best time to avoid crowds and secure a parking spot. The early morning hours seem to be increasingly more crowded every year (mostly with photographers), but still much better than the daytime/evening crowds for sure.

I just love watching the light change as the sun comes up and the blossoms really popped this year against the most beautiful, clear blue sky.

I always park near the George Mason Memorial so I can see this gorgeous magnolia tree next to the bright yellow forsythia after I leave the Tidal Basin.

One of the many gorgeous trees around Hains Point.

And because that wasn't enough, here are a few shots from my iPhone:

Just a few of the many, many tripods lining the Tidal Basin.

This year's cherry blossom trip came together at the last minute. Ben's work schedule happened to open up just in time for one of the peak days for the blossoms so I was able to leave the kids with him and head up to D.C. Amelia had been begging to go with me, telling me how sad it was that this would be the first year of her life that she wouldn't see the cherry blossoms. But I think she mostly just wanted to miss school. I surprised her and picked her up early from school and brought her along. She pretty much just read Harry Potter for the entire 4 1/2 hour drive there (and home) and I enjoyed listening to some podcasts. I was able to have a wonderful night out with my friend Jessica (dinner in Old Town...loved seeing spring in Old Town again) while Amelia got to have a play date with her dear friend Abi. Abi didn't know Amelia was coming and the surprised/happy look on her face when we pulled up was almost worth the trip alone. It made me so happy to see them together again.

It was so great to have Jessica join us for the blossoms the next morning. Amelia wasn't too happy about the early morning wake up and the chilly morning temps. But she trudged along the Tidal Basin with us and had fun taking some photos of her own.

Amelia and Abi the night before.
