After our visit to the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, we discovered that our favorite North Carolina fast food chain is now in Richmond so we picked up lunch from Cook-Out and then headed to Maymont to do some exploring. We have visited Maymont at many different times of year and it is always beautiful. The fall colors were still bright and the kids had fun running through all of the gardens.

richmond: chihuly
Amelia had a few days off of school last week so Ben took some time off and we spent a day down in Richmond.
Our first stop was the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts to see the Chihuly exhibit. The last time we saw his work was in Arizona, shortly after the stingray incident of '09. The desert setting for his work was really cool. This exhibit was much different, but just as dramatic with a sea theme. Amelia had learned about Chihuly in her art class so we were excited for her to see his work in person. All of the kids were mesmerized by the colorful glass sculptures. So beautiful.
We walked through a few other exhibits in the museum before the kids reached their museum limit and then headed outside for more adventures.

s'mores.
Before Dan and his family headed back to Texas, we were able to have everyone over one evening for pumpkin baked goods, hot chocolate, and s'mores. It was a chilly night and perfect for a fire in the backyard. The kids didn't seem to be bothered by the cold (or the fact that it was dark) and had fun playing in the leaves and roasting marshmallows.

monuments.
We met Ben's parents and Dan and his family downtown a few Saturdays ago to walk around some of the monuments. It was freezing cold that day but still nice to be outside enjoying the sites. I never tire of visiting the monuments. We went out to lunch and then visited the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial and the Lincoln Memorial.

The kids had so much fun just walking along these walls.
