nordic cool.

When I read about the Nordic Cool festival coming to the Kennedy Center (you can read about it here), I knew we would have to check it out, especially since it combines two things I love: the Kennedy Center and all things Nordic.

We went Monday afternoon since Amelia gets out early on Mondays and it turned out to be a great time to go. No crowds. (Hopefully we can make it back at night while the exhibit is still going to see the Northern Lights projected on the exterior of the Kennedy Center.)

I love wandering the majestic halls of the Kennedy Center. There were some great exhibits that made excellent use of the large spaces.

The boat made out of shirts (from an artist in Finland) was really fun. The kids were amazed by its size. I loved the way the sun was coming through the windows and casting light on the shirts.

The Nordic furniture designs were fantastic. We wanted to steal a few chairs.

The girls were excited about the Nordic fashions. Especially the horse lamp.

The exhibit on endangered waterfalls in Iceland was fantastic. An Icelandic artist had put photographs of different waterfalls on glass and you could slide them out and see the image against the light walls on either side. At the same time, there were audio recordings of the waterfall that would play.

I was glad we ended with the Lego/iPad display because the kids did not want to leave. (Legos are from Denmark and the iPads were loaded with games created by companies in the Nordic region.) Oliver couldn't decide between iPads and Legos so he just ran back and forth between the two. Amelia got really into creating a huge Lego structure that included a waterfall and many other elaborate features. Elsa spent most of her time with the iPads.

I love the massive terraces at the Kennedy Center. The kids weren't too happy to leave the Lego exhibit but the minute we got them outside, they just started running and were equally impressed with the large empty space with beautiful views.
