New Year's Day
I started 2016 with a run at Lake Johnson. We were still enjoying warm weather which was perfect for an early morning run. We went to Raven Rock in the afternoon for our annual New Year's Day hike. It was fun to have my parents join us.
New Year's Eve
We got home from our southern getaway just in time to celebrate New Year's Eve with everyone. We made some yummy food. Our tradition is to usually just have lots of appetizers to munch on all night. The girls managed to stay up until midnight and toasted the new year with us. Bonus: Simon didn't knock our tree down this year!

Southern Getaway: Charleston
We spent all day exploring and eating our way through the beautiful city of Charleston. We took a horse-drawn carriage ride in the morning around the historic district and learned a little history. My pregnant self enjoyed the seated tour. We explored quite a bit on foot afterward to get a closer look at the beautiful homes and churches. We strolled along the waterfront and saw the big pineapple fountain. It was so warm that kids were swimming in the fountain!
We drove to Sullivan's Island and had the most delicious lunch at The Obstinate Daughter. The frogmore chowder was our favorite but everything else was delicious too, including the geechie frites, gnocchi, and pizza. We picked up some refreshing gelato next door and walked around on the beach, enjoying the warm December weather.
We tried Hominy Grill for dinner and it was another fantastic, very southern meal. We even dined in the outdoor patio which was fun for a December evening. I loved their jalapeno hushpuppies with sorghum butter and all of my veggie sides we tried were yummy too. The chocolate pudding was soooo creamy and good. We wandered around Charleston a bit more that night, doing a little shopping and ended our night with a giant 12-layer slice of famous coconut cake from Peninsula Grill. The next morning we enjoyed another yummy breakfast at our hotel and then made our way back home, enjoying another kid-free drive with lots of uninterrupted conversation and podcasts.
