utah: the other farm
On our way back to Salt Lake, we were able to make a stop in Plain City to visit my Aunt and Uncle, who live in my grandparent's old house (and the house that my dad grew up in). I was excited that my kids got to see both of the farms that I spent so much time at as a child.

The actual "games" began on the second day. There was a cornucopia that contained essential items for each competition and tributes would race there and grab what they could.
The first activity was building a shelter. We were given a tarp and some ropes and had to find wood and test our knot tying skills. As each team completed their shelter, they could run back to the cornucopia and grab an item for their lunch (different kinds of peanut butter).
Next up we had an archery competition.
Then we had to build a fire with whatever items our tribute retrieved from the cornucopia. Our group had flint and steel. We were getting tons of sparks but our hay didn't ignite until we sprayed a little sunscreen spray on it. We raced back to the cornucopia to retrieve another element of our lunch (some sort of jelly).
Then each district was given a different course we had to follow using a compass. It took us all over the farm and eventually lead everyone to some bread (my grandma's delicious homemade bread).
After lunch I had the kids do the marshmallow throwing game which is always a hit. Eventually everyone joined in and the kids turned and started throwing at the people on the sidelines. Then the water balloon launcher got involved. There's something really fun about throwing those jumbo marshmallows.
Another event was a race at the pond...one tribute from each district had to run around the pond, down the waterslide, swim to the side and retrieve a watermelon and then bring it back.
My uncle built an awesome waterslide into the pond. My kids had been waiting for days to try it out.
Amelia and Elsa and a few other kids stayed for another hour after everyone had left. They just couldn't get enough of the slide.
We also had a salsa making competition for our snack. Tributes had to race to the cornucopia and grab as many ingredients as they could. Then they had a minute to swap with other tributes. We came up with some yummy salsas.
We ended the evening with a talent show, a campfire, ice cream sundaes, and night games. When it was dark, we laid on the grass with the girls and showed them the stars. We don't usually get to see so many. They were in total awe. There were lots of shooting stars that night.
