Cape May Ferry

We planned another "meet in the middle" trip with my brother (who is in Vermont) and decided to try out Sleepy Hollow, New York, this year. Last fall we did the Finger Lakes with him and my sister (who has since abandoned us for the West coast) and absolutely loved the gorgeous scenery (seen here and here). Shortly after our trip last year I read about this amazing jack 'o lantern blaze near Sleepy Hollow and was hoping we could make it work this year. We were thrilled my brother was able to get away from his crazy residency schedule for a few days and meet us.

We decided to leave a day early and finally make a trip to the Statue of Liberty. And then the government shut down. And so did the Statue of Liberty. So I came up with a Plan B. I have wanted to visit Cape May, New Jersey, for a long time and this seemed like the perfect chance. It would even involve a boat ride like the original plan. We drove about 2 1/2 hours to Lewes, Delaware, and got on the car ferry there. The kids loved it and thought it was fun to drive our car right onto the boat. Well, everyone loved it but Oliver. He was a little freaked out by the whole experience.

At one point the captain announced that there were dolphins ahead. We were inside at this point and the girls just dropped all their stuff and took off running to get out and spot them. We saw at least a dozen dolphins swim past the boat which was fun. (Except for Ben who was trying to keep Oliver calm in the video arcade.)

They handed out coloring books to the kids and the captain even came and said hello to us.

This RV looked ridiculously large next to all the cars.
