spring in Old Salem

I took the kids to Winston-Salem for a quick day trip back in April. We walked around Old Salem and saw lots of beautiful trees and flowers blooming. We watched the puppet show there and then headed to the children's museum for the afternoon.

I had read somewhere that Winston-Salem had the only remaining shell-shaped gas station (this was built in the 1930s) and we found it!

Saturday Outing: Raven Rock

Our Saturday mornings are filled with gymnastics and ballet now, but we were feeling the need for an adventure a few weeks ago so we headed to Raven Rock State Park for an afternoon hike. It's located less than an hour away and was a great spot for a winter hike. The rock formations were really cool and many had icicles hanging from them. The kids loved climbing all over and exploring. They were distracted enough that they didn't even complain during the 3 1/2 mile hike. There weren't many other people out on the trail which was also nice.

Christmas in Old Salem

We spent an afternoon in Old Salem right before Christmas. I had taken the kids there in the fall but we didn't tour any of the buildings so it was interesting to go inside the different shops and houses and learn more about the Moravians and how they lived in the late 1700s. It was especially fun to see it at Christmas time with all of the pretty wreaths, garlands and Moravian stars. The simplicity of the decorations was really nice.

Peek-a-boo with Grandma.
