spring in Old Salem

I took the kids to Winston-Salem for a quick day trip back in April. We walked around Old Salem and saw lots of beautiful trees and flowers blooming. We watched the puppet show there and then headed to the children's museum for the afternoon.

I had read somewhere that Winston-Salem had the only remaining shell-shaped gas station (this was built in the 1930s) and we found it!

Children's Museum of Winston-Salem

There was a Children's Museum just down the street from Old Salem so I surprised the kids with a stop there before we headed home. We had every exhibit completely to ourselves which was awesome. It was a really fun museum. The first Krispy Kreme store was in Winston-Salem so they had a fun exhibit where you could pretend to work at Krispy Kreme and make donuts.

This outdoor sculpture was really cool. It was hand-crocheted by an artist in Japan. The kids could have climbed on this thing all day.

Old Salem

The kids had a day off of school towards the end of October so we decided to check out Old Salem Museums and Gardens in Winston-Salem. I wasn't sure what to expect but I loved it. (Salem was founded in 1766 by the Moravians.) The fall colors were at their peak and absolutely stunning. All the textures on the old buildings were gorgeous. We walked around the quaint, historic streets and popped into the bakery for some delicious treats. (We didn't buy a ticket to go into any of the buildings for tours. I'll save that for a time when I'm not on my own with the kids.) They have a fun heirloom puppet theater and the kids loved watching the puppet show about Johnny Appleseed.
