Old Salem

We had planned to go to the beach for the weekend when Ben's parents were here. Unfortunately, a tropical storm had the same plans so we decided to head to the mountains instead. It turned out to be a great alternative. We stopped in Old Salem on our way to Boone and walked around a bit. We also stopped at the vintage Shell Gas Station in Winston-Salem.

spring in Old Salem

I took the kids to Winston-Salem for a quick day trip back in April. We walked around Old Salem and saw lots of beautiful trees and flowers blooming. We watched the puppet show there and then headed to the children's museum for the afternoon.

I had read somewhere that Winston-Salem had the only remaining shell-shaped gas station (this was built in the 1930s) and we found it!

doors and windows of Old Salem

Christmas in Old Salem

We spent an afternoon in Old Salem right before Christmas. I had taken the kids there in the fall but we didn't tour any of the buildings so it was interesting to go inside the different shops and houses and learn more about the Moravians and how they lived in the late 1700s. It was especially fun to see it at Christmas time with all of the pretty wreaths, garlands and Moravian stars. The simplicity of the decorations was really nice.

Peek-a-boo with Grandma.
