utah: the hunger games day 1

My mom's family has a reunion every year on my Grandma's farm in northern Utah. It had been way too long since we had been there so we were excited we were able to make it this year. There is a theme every year and lots of fun activities based on the theme. My mom was in charge this year and did a "Hunger Games" theme that turned out to be super fun.

This swing (or some form of it) has been around ever since I can remember. It's fun to see my kids enjoy it now.

Amelia and Naomi set up a lemonade stand one day.

"Should we not be playing with permanent markers in here?" (Also, Oliver is soaking wet and on his third outfit of the day. Always something to get into on the farm.)

We drove through what felt like a bug storm on the way to my grandma's house.

On the first day of The Hunger Games, we divided into five districts and spent some time doing some training. We learned how to use a compass, how to tie knots, how to set traps for animals, and other survival skills. And my sister Steph taught everyone archery.

There was also time for some water balloon action.

Wet again.

My cousin Kimi showed us how to make backpacks out of old t-shirts. Check out her awesome blog for instructions.

My dad taught everyone about the yogurt-making process and had all kinds of yogurt samples to try.

That night a male and female tribute were selected from each district (this will sound strange if you're not familiar with The Hunger Games) and then each district was given a few wigs (courtesy of Steph's massive wig collection) and some random supplies like tissue paper and tinfoil to dress their tributes for the "parade of tributes." This gives you an idea of how wacky/fun/crazy my family is. Everyone got quite creative with their supplies and we ended up with some pretty awesome costumes.
